6 Days Marangu Route Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking

Embark on a remarkable 6-day adventure climbing Mount Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route, the only route on Kilimanjaro that offers hut accommodation throughout the trek. This itinerary is designed to provide a balanced and enjoyable climb while allowing for proper acclimatization.

Tanzania eXPLORATION offers a unique service throughout the climb

Climbing Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route is a classic adventure! Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the only route that offers the comfort of sleeping in huts, making it a popular choice for climbers seeking a bit more shelter. It’s also the shortest and most direct route to the summit, but don’t be fooled—reaching Uhuru Peak is still a challenge that requires determination and stamina. During your ascent, you’ll be accompanied by professional guides, porters, and a cook, ensuring you’re well taken care of every step of the way. Our team performs daily health checks each morning and evening to monitor your condition, so you can focus on enjoying the climb. In addition, our dedicated cook will serve you delicious, high-energy meals to keep you fueled throughout the journey. Quality food is essential on this demanding trek, and if you’d like, we can send you the menu in advance. While the Marangu Route provides the unique experience of staying in huts, the adventure is no less rugged. Our clients often describe their Kilimanjaro climb via the Marangu Route as a life-changing experience, and we’re committed to making it safe and unforgettable for you. Once you confirm your booking, we will send you a comprehensive document to help you prepare for the journey ahead.

Day 2: Moshi to Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

This day will be one of your beautiful and longest hikes. For the first sessions, you will walk for 3-4 hours to Shira 1 camp. You will have a lunch stop and short break, and you will cover distance of 7km. After lunch you will hike for about 4 to 5hours to cover the distance of 9km. You will also cross the middle of Shira Plateau, a world heritage site through moorland zone, and arrive in the beautiful overnight camp located at the base of a massive lava flow.

Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

From Mandara Hut, continue your ascent through the heath and moorland zones to Horombo Hut (3,720m). This day is designed to help your body acclimate to the higher altitude. The trek is longer and involves some gradual uphill hiking, but the changing scenery provides a rewarding experience. Spend the night at Horombo Hut.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Proceed from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,703m). The trail transitions into a more arid landscape with alpine desert vegetation. This is a critical acclimatization day as you approach higher altitudes. Enjoy a rest at Kibo Hut and prepare for the final ascent. Make sure to get plenty of rest as you’ll be starting your summit push late at night.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Summit to Horombo Hut

Begin your summit ascent around midnight, heading towards Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The trek is challenging, with steep and icy paths. After reaching the summit and taking in the breathtaking views, descend back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest before continuing to Horombo Hut. This will be a long day, so pace yourself and stay hydrated.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate and Departure

Descend from Horombo Hut back to Marangu Gate. The trek through the rainforest provides a pleasant end to your journey. Once at the gate, complete the formalities and receive your climb certificate. Transfer back to Moshi for a celebratory meal and relax before your departure.
